Origin of Life and Evolution

BiologyEvolutionFor NEET aspirants

The origin of life on earth is understood against the history of the universe and of the earth itself. This page covers the Big Bang, the early earth, panspermia, spontaneous generation and Pasteur's experiment, the Oparin-Haldane idea of chemical evolution, Miller's experiment and Darwin's theory of natural selection, as in the NCERT Class 12 chapter Evolution. NEET often asks the gases used by Miller, the three ideas of special creation and the meaning of Darwinian fitness in questions on the origin of life.

1. What Evolutionary Biology Studies

  • Evolutionary biology: the study of the history of life forms on earth.
  • To follow the changes in flora and fauna over millions of years, we must know how life began.
  • That, in turn, needs the story of the evolution of the earth, of the stars and of the universe itself.
  • The story of the origin of life and of biodiversity is the longest of all reconstructed and conjectured stories.
Key idea
Life's history is read against the history of the earth and of the universe.

2. The Universe and the Early Earth

2.1 Looking back in time

  • Distances to stars are measured in light years.
  • Light reaching us from a star left it millions of years ago, from trillions of kilometres away.
  • So, looking at the stars, we are in a way peeping into the past.
  • Objects in our immediate surroundings are seen instantly, that is, in the present time.

2.2 The universe

  • The origin of life is considered a unique event in the history of the universe.
  • The universe is vast; compared with it, the earth is almost only a speck.
  • ★ Exam imp The universe is very old: about 13.8 billion years.
  • Huge clusters of galaxies make up the universe; galaxies contain stars and clouds of gas and dust.
  • Big Bang theory: explains the origin of the universe as a single, huge explosion, unimaginable in physical terms.

2.3 From the Big Bang to the first oceans

  1. After the explosion, the universe expanded and its temperature fell.
  2. Hydrogen and helium formed some time later.
  3. The gases condensed under gravitation and formed the galaxies of the present-day universe.
  4. In the solar system of the Milky Way galaxy, the earth formed about 4.5 billion years ago.
  5. The early earth had no atmosphere. Water vapour, methane, carbon dioxide and ammonia released from the molten mass covered its surface.
  6. UV rays from the sun split water into hydrogen and oxygen; the lighter escaped.
  7. Oxygen combined with ammonia and methane to form water, and other compounds.
  8. The ozone layer formed.
  9. As the earth cooled, water vapour fell as rain, filled the depressions and formed the oceans.
  10. Life appeared about 500 million years after the earth formed, that is, almost 4 billion years ago.
Memory Trick Wet Mud Covers All: Water vapour, Methane, Carbon dioxide and Ammonia, the gases released from the molten mass that covered the early earth, in that order.
Memory Trick After the earth's 4.5, count down 4, 3, 2. Universe 13.8 and earth 4.5 billion years; then life appears about 4 billion years ago, non-cellular forms about 3 billion years ago, and the first cells about 2 billion (2000 million) years ago.
Key idea
The earth formed about 4.5 billion years ago and life appeared about half a billion years later, in water.

3. Early Ideas on the Origin of Life

3.1 Panspermia

  • Some scientists believe that life came to earth from outer space.
  • Early Greek thinkers held that units of life called spores were transferred to different planets, including the earth.
  • ★ Exam imp Panspermia: the idea that life arrived from outer space; it is still a favourite idea of some astronomers.

3.2 Spontaneous generation

  • Spontaneous generation: the old belief that life arose from decaying and rotting matter, such as straw and mud.
  • It was accepted for a long time.

3.3 Pasteur's experiment

Louis Pasteur tested the idea by careful experiments:

  1. He kept killed yeast in pre-sterilised flasks: no life arose.
  2. He kept killed yeast in another flask open to air: new living organisms arose.
  3. Conclusion: life comes only from pre-existing life.
Memory Trick Pre-sterilised flask, no life; flask open to air, new life. Picture Pasteur's two flasks of killed yeast side by side.
★ Very important Life comes only from pre-existing life. Pasteur's experiment dismissed spontaneous generation once and for all, but it did not explain how the first life form arose on earth.
Key idea
Panspermia moves the question to space; Pasteur ended spontaneous generation but left the first origin unexplained.

4. Chemical Evolution and Miller's Experiment

4.1 The Oparin-Haldane proposal

  • ★ Exam imp Oparin of Russia and Haldane of England proposed that the first life came from pre-existing non-living organic molecules (for example, RNA and protein).
  • They held that the formation of life was preceded by chemical evolution.
  • Conditions on the early earth: high temperature, volcanic storms and a reducing atmosphere containing , and other gases.
★ Very important Chemical evolution: the formation of diverse organic molecules from inorganic constituents, which came before the formation of life.

4.2 Miller's experiment (1953)

  • S.L. Miller, an American scientist, recreated these conditions on a laboratory scale in 1953.
  1. ★ Exam imp A closed flask held , , and water vapour at 800 °C.
  2. An electric discharge (spark) was passed through the gases between two electrodes.
  3. The products collected in water: amino acids had formed.
Diagrammatic representation of Miller's experiment Diagram of Miller's apparatus. A large glass flask at the top holds the gases methane, ammonia, water vapour and hydrogen, with two electrodes making a spark discharge inside it. From this flask a tube runs down through a water-cooled condenser, with water in at the bottom and water out at the top, where water droplets form. The tube leads to a U-shaped trap holding liquid water, where water containing organic compounds collects. A small flask of boiling water at the lower left sends vapour up a long tube back into the gas flask. A side tap leads to a vacuum pump. Labels: electrodes, spark discharge, gases (CH4, NH3, H2O, H2), water out, condenser, water in, water droplets, water containing organic compounds, liquid water in trap, boiling water, to vacuum pump. Electrodes Spark discharge Water out Condenser Water in Water droplets Water containingorganic compounds Gases:CH4, NH3,H2O, H2 To vacuumpump Boiling water Liquid water in trap
Figure 1: Diagrammatic representation of Miller's experiment. An electric spark through methane, ammonia, hydrogen and water vapour produced amino acids, which collected in the water trap.
  • In similar experiments, others observed the formation of sugars, nitrogen bases, pigment and fats.
  • Analysis of meteorite content revealed similar compounds, so similar processes are probably occurring elsewhere in space.
  • With this limited evidence, the first part of the story, chemical evolution, was more or less accepted.
Memory Trick My Aunt Has Water: Methane, Ammonia, Hydrogen, Water vapour, the four gases in Miller's flask. Add "spark at 800 °C" and "amino acids" to complete the answer.
NEET Focus Miller's gases were , , and water vapour; oxygen was not among them, because the early atmosphere was reducing. Miller himself obtained amino acids. Sugars, nitrogen bases, pigment and fats came from similar experiments by others. Statement questions often swap these.
Key idea
Chemical evolution, organic molecules from inorganic ones, is supported by Miller's amino acids and by meteorite analysis.

5. The First Forms of Life

  • We have no idea how the first self-replicating metabolic capsule of life arose.
  • ★ Exam imp The first non-cellular forms of life could have originated about 3 billion years ago.
  • They would have been giant molecules (RNA, protein, polysaccharides, etc.); these capsules perhaps reproduced their own molecules.
  • The first cellular form of life probably did not arise until about 2000 million years ago.
  • These were probably single cells, and all life forms lived in a water environment only.
  • ★ Exam imp Abiogenesis: the view that the first form of life arose slowly, through evolutionary forces, from non-living molecules. Most scientists accept it.
  • How these first cells evolved into today's complex biodiversity is the story of evolution.
Non-cellular forms
  • About 3 billion years ago
  • Giant molecules: RNA, protein, polysaccharides
  • Perhaps reproduced their own molecules
Cellular forms
  • About 2000 million years ago
  • Probably single cells
  • Lived in water only
Quick Recall: tap to check
Who proposed that chemical evolution came before life?
Oparin of Russia and Haldane of England.
Name the four gases in Miller's flask.
Methane (), hydrogen (), ammonia () and water vapour.
What did Pasteur's flasks with killed yeast prove?
Life comes only from pre-existing life; spontaneous generation is false.
When did the first cellular forms of life probably appear?
About 2000 million years ago, as single cells in water.
Key idea
Non-cellular giant molecules (about 3 billion years ago) came before the first single cells (about 2000 million years ago).

6. Special Creation and Darwin's Theory

6.1 The theory of special creation

Conventional religious literature describes the theory of special creation. It has three connotations:

  1. All living organisms (species or types) seen today were created as such.
  2. Diversity was always the same since creation and will remain the same in future.
  3. The earth is about 4000 years old.
  • All three ideas were strongly challenged during the nineteenth century.
Memory Trick Three S's of special creation: Species created as such, Same diversity for ever, Short history (an earth about 4000 years old).

6.2 Darwin's observations

  • Charles Darwin sailed round the world on a sail ship called H.M.S. Beagle.
  • He concluded that living forms share similarities to varying degrees, among themselves and with life forms of millions of years ago.
  • Many such life forms no longer exist: extinctions occurred, just as new forms arose at different periods of the earth's history.
  • Hence, life forms have undergone gradual evolution.

6.3 Natural selection and fitness

  • Every population has built-in variation in characteristics.
  • Individuals whose characteristics help them survive better in natural conditions (climate, food, physical factors) outbreed the less endowed.
  • ★ Exam imp Fitness, according to Darwin, refers ultimately and only to reproductive fitness.
  • The fitter leave more progeny, survive more and so are selected by nature.
  • Natural selection: Darwin's name for this process; he proposed it as a mechanism of evolution.
  • ★ Exam imp Alfred Wallace, a naturalist who worked in the Malay Archipelago, reached similar conclusions around the same time.
★ Very important Darwinian fitness is reproductive fitness: the ability to leave more progeny, not physical strength. Those better fit to an environment leave more offspring and are selected by nature.

6.4 Common ancestry and the age of the earth

  • Over time, apparently new types of organisms become recognisable.
  • All existing life forms share similarities and share common ancestors.
  • These ancestors lived at different periods of the earth's history (epochs, periods and eras).
  • The geological history of the earth correlates closely with its biological history.
  • Conclusion: the earth is very old, billions of years and not thousands of years as was thought earlier.
Special creation
  • Species created as such; they never change
  • Diversity fixed for ever
  • Earth about 4000 years old
Darwin's view
  • Species change gradually; common ancestors
  • Extinctions and new forms change diversity
  • Earth billions of years old
Tips and Tricks Pair each naturalist with his place. Darwin: H.M.S. Beagle (voyage round the world). Wallace: Malay Archipelago. In statement questions, "fittest means strongest" is false; "fitness means leaving more progeny" is true.
Quick Recall: tap to check
State the three connotations of special creation.
Species were created as such; diversity has always been the same; the earth is about 4000 years old.
What does fitness mean according to Darwin?
Reproductive fitness: leaving more progeny.
Who reached conclusions similar to Darwin's, and where did he work?
Alfred Wallace, in the Malay Archipelago.
Key idea
Variation, better survival and more progeny lead to natural selection; it implies common ancestry and a very old earth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the theory of chemical evolution?

Chemical evolution is the formation of diverse organic molecules, such as amino acids, from inorganic constituents. Oparin of Russia and Haldane of England proposed that it preceded the origin of life. The early earth had high temperature, volcanic storms and a reducing atmosphere with methane and ammonia, which favoured such reactions.

What did Miller's experiment show?

In 1953, S.L. Miller passed an electric discharge through methane, hydrogen, ammonia and water vapour in a closed flask at 800 degrees Celsius. Amino acids formed. This supported chemical evolution. Others later obtained sugars, nitrogen bases, pigment and fats in similar experiments.

What is panspermia?

Panspermia is the idea that life came to earth from outer space. Early Greek thinkers believed that units of life called spores were transferred to different planets, including the earth. It remains a favourite idea of some astronomers, but it does not explain how life first began.

How did Louis Pasteur disprove spontaneous generation?

Pasteur kept killed yeast in pre-sterilised flasks and found that no life arose. In a similar flask open to air, new organisms arose from the killed yeast. This showed that life comes only from pre-existing life, and the theory of spontaneous generation was dismissed once and for all.

When did the first cellular forms of life appear?

The first non-cellular forms of life, giant molecules such as RNA and proteins, could have arisen about 3 billion years ago. The first cellular forms probably did not appear until about 2000 million years ago. They were probably single cells, and all life then lived in water.

What are the three ideas of the theory of special creation?

Special creation holds that all living organisms seen today were created as such, that diversity has always been the same and will stay the same, and that the earth is about 4000 years old. All three ideas were strongly challenged during the nineteenth century.

What does fitness mean in Darwin's theory?

For Darwin, fitness refers ultimately and only to reproductive fitness. Individuals better suited to their environment leave more progeny than others. Over generations they survive in greater numbers and are selected by nature. Darwin called this process natural selection and proposed it as a mechanism of evolution.

Which points on the origin of life are most asked in NEET?

NEET most often asks the gases and conditions of Miller's experiment, the product he obtained, the contributions of Oparin, Haldane and Pasteur, the three connotations of special creation, the ages of the universe and the earth, and the meaning of Darwinian fitness. Match-the-list questions pair these scientists with their ideas.
