JEE Main 2025 Apr 2 Shift 2, Mathematics Q16: Combinations
The number of ways, in which the letters A, B, C, D, E can be placed in the 8 boxes of the figure below so that no row remains empty and at most one letter can be placed in a box, is :

- A
- B
- C
- D
Let the rows contain boxes respectively (total ). Place the distinct letters into the boxes with at most one letter per box.
Total placements (no row restriction): choose of the boxes and arrange the letters in ways .
Subtract the placements that leave at least one row empty using inclusion-exclusion. The number of placements with row empty (all 5 letters land in the other two rows, which together have boxes):
Row 1 empty: .
Row 2 empty: .
Row 3 empty: .
Two rows simultaneously empty would force all letters into a single row with at most boxes — impossible, so intersection terms vanish.
Valid placements .
