JEE Main 2025 Apr 3 Shift 2, Chemistry Q14: d-Block Elements

JEE Main2025Apr 3, Shift 2Chemistry
Q.

Given below are two statements :

Statement I : CrO is a stronger oxidizing agent than MoO

Statement II : Cr(VI) is more stable than Mo(VI)

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below

  1. A

Statement I is false but Statement II is true

  2. B

Statement I is true but Statement II is false

  3. C

Both Statement I and Statement II are true

  4. D

Both Statement I and Statement II are false

Solution

Within group 6 of the d-block, higher oxidation states become more stable as one descends the group. So Mo(VI) is more stable than Cr(VI), not the other way around. Statement II is therefore false.

Because Cr(VI) is comparatively unstable, CrO readily accepts electrons and drops to Cr(III), which makes it a strong oxidising agent. MoO, with its more stable +6 state, resists reduction and is a much weaker oxidiser. Statement I is therefore true.

Statement I is true, Statement II is false, matching option (2).
