JEE Main 2025 Apr 4 Shift 2, Chemistry Q14: Periodicity In Atomic Properties
Given below are two statements :
Statement (I) : The first ionisation enthalpy of group 14 elements is higher than the corresponding elements of group 13.
Statement (II) : Melting points and boiling points of group 13 elements are in general much higher than those the corresponding elements of group 14.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
- A
Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
- B
Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
- C
Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
- D
Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
Statement (I) is correct. Across a period, the effective nuclear charge increases, so the first ionisation enthalpy of a group-14 element is greater than that of the group-13 element to its left (e.g. of C B, Si Al, and so on).
Statement (II) is incorrect. Group-14 elements (carbon, silicon, germanium) form three-dimensional covalent networks and have markedly higher melting and boiling points than their group-13 counterparts. The statement reverses the actual trend.
Only Statement (I) is correct.
