JEE Main 2025 Jan 22 Shift 1, Chemistry Q13: Naming of Carboxylic acids & Its Derivatives

JEE Main2025Jan 22, Shift 1Chemistry
Q.

The IUPAC name of the following compound is :

  1. A

    2-Carboxy-5-methoxycarbonylhexane.

  2. B

    Methyl-6-carboxy-2,5-dimethylhexanoate.

  3. C

    Methyl-5-carboxy-2-methylhexanoate.

  4. D

    6-Methoxycarbonyl-2,5-dimethylhexanoic acid.

Solution

In IUPAC priority, COOH ranks higher than COOR (ester). So the COOH is named as the principal characteristic group (suffix oic acid) and the ester group is treated as a substituent (methoxycarbonyl).

Choosing the longest chain that includes COOH (6 carbons) and numbering so that the COOH carbon gets the lowest locant (C1), the chain is hexanoic acid. Methyl substituents fall at C2 and C5; the methoxycarbonyl group is at C6.

Name: 6-methoxycarbonyl-2,5-dimethylhexanoic acid.
