JEE Main 2025 Jan 22 Shift 2, Chemistry Q19: Common Cell
Given below are two statements :
Statement (I) : Corrosion is an electrochemical phenomenon in which pure metal acts as an anode and impure metal as a cathode.
Statement (II) : The rate of corrosion is more in alkaline medium than in acidic medium.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- A
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- B
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
- C
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- D
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
Corrosion is an electrochemical process: on a metal surface with inhomogeneities, the more active (purer/strained) region behaves as the anode and undergoes oxidation, while the impure or less active region acts as the cathode where reduction (typically of dissolved oxygen) occurs. Statement-I is true.
The cathodic reaction is favoured by a higher concentration of , i.e. in acidic medium. Hence corrosion proceeds faster in acidic medium than in alkaline medium. Statement-II claims the opposite and is therefore false.
Statement I is true but Statement II is false.
