Q.

Preparation of potassium permanganate from MnO involves two step process in which the 1 step is a reaction with KOH and KNO to produce

  1. A

  2. B

  3. C

  4. D

Solution

The industrial preparation of KMnO from pyrolusite has two stages.

Stage 1 (alkaline oxidative fusion): MnO is fused with KOH in the presence of an oxidising agent such as KNO (or air, or KClO). Mn(IV) is oxidised to Mn(VI), giving the green manganate ion:

Stage 2: is then oxidised (electrolytically or with Cl/O) to the purple Mn(VII) species KMnO.

The first-step product is therefore . Option (4).
