JEE Main 2025 Jan 24 Shift 2, Chemistry Q7: Important Concepts Of Chemical Bonding
Given below are two statements :
Statement (I) : Experimentally determined oxygen-oxygen bond lengths in the are found to be same and the bond length is greater than that of a (double bond) but less than that of a single bond.
Statement (II) : The strong lone pair-lone pair repulsion between oxygen atoms is solely responsible for the fact that the bond length in ozone is smaller than that of a double bond but more than that of a single bond .
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- A
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
- B
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- C
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- D
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
Ozone is best represented as a resonance hybrid of two equivalent Lewis structures, with the -electrons delocalised over the three-centre system. Because of this delocalisation, each O–O linkage has a bond order of , so both bonds are identical and their length lies between a pure single bond (148 pm) and a pure double bond (121 pm). Statement I is correct.
The intermediate bond length is therefore explained by resonance / delocalised -bonding, not by lone pair-lone pair repulsion. Lone pair repulsion influences bond angle but is not the reason for the observed bond length. Statement II is incorrect.
Correct option: (1)
