JEE Main 2025 Jan 28 Shift 1, Physics Q8: Sound Waves
Given below are two statements: one is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R
Assertion A: A sound wave has higher speed in solids than gases.
Reason R: Gases have higher value of Bulk modulus than solids.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
- A
Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
- B
A is false but R is true
- C
Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A
- D
A is true but R is false.
Speed of sound in a medium is , where is the bulk modulus and the density.
Solids have very high bulk moduli (tightly bound atoms resist compression), so sound speeds in solids are typically several thousand m/s; gases have much lower bulk moduli, giving sound speeds of a few hundred m/s. Assertion A is true.
The reason as stated reverses the bulk-modulus comparison: solids have higher bulk modulus than gases, not the other way round. Reason R is false.
A is true but R is false.
