A 400 g solid cube having an edge of length 10 cm floats in water. How much volume of the cube is outside the water ?

(Given : density of water $= 1000$ kg m $^{- 3}$ )

Solution

In equilibrium, weight of cube equals weight of water displaced:

$M g = ρ_{w} V_{submerged} g \Rightarrow V_{submerged} = \frac{M}{ρ _{w}} = \frac{0.4 kg}{1000 kg/m ^{3}} = 4 \times 1 0^{- 4} m^{3} = 400$ cm $^{3}$ .

Volume of cube $= 1 0^{3} = 1000$ cm $^{3}$ , so the volume above water is $1000 - 400 = 600$ cm $^{3}$ .
