The alkali fusion of chromite in air is the industrial first step for chromium extraction:

$4 FeC r_{2} O_{4} + 8 N a_{2} C O_{3} + 7 O_{2} ⟶ 8 N a_{2} Cr O_{4} + 2 F e_{2} O_{3} + 8 C O_{2} .$

Of the two solid products, sodium chromate ( $N a_{2} Cr O_{4}$ ) is water soluble and is leached out, while ferric oxide ( $F e_{2} O_{3}$ ) is the water-insoluble residue.

Molar mass of $F e_{2} O_{3} = 2 (56) + 3 (16) = 112 + 48 = 160 g mo l^{- 1} .$
