JEE Main 2025 Jan 29 Shift 2, Chemistry Q8: Resonance & Mesomeric Effect
Given below are two statements :
Statement (I) : On nitration of m-xylene with , followed by oxidation, 4-nitrobenzene-1, 3-dicarboxylic acid is obtained as the major product.
Statement (II) : group is o/p-directing while group is m-directing group.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- A
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- B
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
- C
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- D
Statement I is true but Statement II is false

m-Xylene has methyl groups at positions and . Both are ortho/para directors. Position (between them) is sterically blocked, so nitration enters at position , which is ortho to one and para to the other.
This gives 4-nitro-1,3-dimethylbenzene. Oxidation of both methyl groups with strong oxidants converts them to carboxylic acids, yielding 4-nitrobenzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid. Statement I is correct.
The classical directing effects also hold: alkyl groups donate by hyperconjugation and inductive effects (o/p directing), while withdraws electron density and is meta directing. Statement II is correct.
Both statements are true.
