Q.

An organic compound "x" where molar ratio of C, O and H are equal, on treatment with KOH under reflux followed by acidification produced "y". The most likely structure of "y" is:

[Molar mass of 'x' is g mol]

  1. A

    1

  2. B

    2

  3. C

    3

  4. D

    4

Solution

With equal C, O and H atoms and molar mass , let the formula be CHO. For : CHO has mass . This is glyoxal (OHCCHO).

Glyoxal lacks -hydrogens, so under concentrated KOH it undergoes intramolecular Cannizzaro disproportionation: one CHO is oxidised to COO and the other is reduced to CHOH, giving the salt of glycolic acid.

Acidification yields HOCHCOOH (glycolic acid) — option (3).
