JEE Main 2026 Apr 5 Shift 2, Chemistry Q19: Carbohydrates
Given below are two statements:
Statement-I: The two cyclic structures shown below are two anomers of D-(+)-glucose.
and
Statement-II: The open chain forms of D-glucose and D-fructose contain three similar chiral carbons at , and .
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:
- A
Both Statement-I and Statement-II are true.
- B
Both Statement-I and Statement-II are false.
- C
Statement-I is true but Statement-II is false.
- D
Statement-I is false but Statement-II is true.
Statement-I: The two structures differ only at C1 (the anomeric carbon); the OH at C1 is below the ring plane in -D-glucopyranose and above in -D-glucopyranose. These are anomers. True.
Statement-II: In D-glucose (an aldohexose) C2, C3, C4, C5 are stereocentres; in D-fructose (a ketohexose) C3, C4, C5 are stereocentres. At C3, C4, C5 the configurations are identical between the two sugars (both have the D-series pattern). True.
