Q.

Arrange the following alkenes in decreasing order of stability.

Choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. A

    III > I > II > IV

  2. B

    III > II > I > IV

  3. C

    I > II > III > IV

  4. D

    I > III > II > IV

Solution

Alkene stability increases with the number of -hydrogens (hyperconjugation) and with substitution at the double bond.

Counting -hydrogens:

I (tetrasubstituted):

II (trisubstituted):

III (disubstituted, trans):

IV (disubstituted, cis):

III and IV tie on hyperconjugation, but the trans isomer (III) avoids steric repulsion between the two methyl groups present in the cis isomer (IV), so III is more stable.

Stability order: I > II > III > IV.
