Q.
The reactions which produce alcohol as the product area :
A.
B.
C.
D.
E.
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- A
A and D Only
- B
A, C and E Only
- C
C and D Only
- D
B, D and E Only
Solution
Identify the major product of each:
A. CH + O over MoO catalyst gives HCHO (formaldehyde), not an alcohol.
B. Manganese-acetate catalysed oxidation of ethane gives CHCOOH (acetic acid).
C. Tertiary C-H of isobutane is selectively oxidised by KMnO to tert-butyl alcohol — alcohol.
D. CH + O over Cu at 523 K and 100 atm gives CHOH (methanol) — alcohol.
E. Hot acidic KMnO cleaves the alkene to give two equivalents of acetic acid.
Only C and D give alcohol.
