Solution

In a neutral aqueous medium, permanganate is reduced to MnO $_{2}$ while iodide is oxidised to iodate:

$I^{-} + 2 MnO_{4}^{-} + H_{2} O neutral 2 MnO_{2} + IO_{3}^{-} + 2 OH^{-}$

The iodine-containing product is the iodate ion, IO $_{3}^{-}$ , option (B). Note that in acidic medium I $_{2}$ would form, and in strongly alkaline medium periodate can form; here the conditions specify neutral solution.
