JEE Main2025Apr 3, Shift 1Chemistry
Q.

Which of the following postulate of Bohr's model of hydrogen atom in not in agreement with quantum mechanical model of an atom ?

  1. A

An atom in a stationary state does not emit electromagnetic radiation as long as it stays in the same state

  2. B

An atom can take only certain distinct energies , etc. These allowed states of constant energy are called the stationary states of atom

  3. C

When an electron makes a transition from a higher energy stationary state to a lower energy stationary state, then it emits a photon of light

  4. D

The electron in a H atom's stationary state moves in a circle around the nucleus

Solution

The quantum mechanical model rejects the idea of fixed circular orbits. According to quantum mechanics, the electron in a hydrogen atom is described by a probability distribution (orbital), not a well-defined trajectory.

Postulates (1), (2), and (3) of the Bohr model, dealing with stationary states, quantised energies, and photon emission on transition, are retained (with reinterpretation) in the quantum mechanical description. Only the idea of a definite circular path is discarded.

Option (4) is the postulate that does not agree with the quantum mechanical model.
