JEE Main 2025 Apr 3 Shift 1, Chemistry Q2: Group 15 Elements: The Nitrogen Family
Given below are two statements
Statement I : The N–N single bond is weaker and longer than that of P–P single bond
Statement II : Compounds of group 15 elements in +3 oxidation states readily undergo disproportionation reactions.
In the light of above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
- A
Statement I is true but statement II is false
- B
Both statement I and statement II are false
- C
Statement I is false but statement II is true
- D
Both statement I and statement II are true
Statement I: The N–N single bond is actually weaker than P–P, but it is shorter, not longer. The small size of nitrogen brings the two lone pairs close together, causing significant lone pair–lone pair repulsion which weakens the bond, yet the bond length itself () is less than because P is the larger atom. So Statement I is false.
Statement II: Among group 15 elements in the +3 state, only nitrogen and phosphorus show appreciable disproportionation. Heavier members (As, Sb, Bi) are stable in +3 due to the inert pair effect and do not readily disproportionate. So the blanket claim in Statement II is false.
Both statements are false.
