JEE Main 2025 Apr 4 Shift 2, Chemistry Q6: Preparation of Alkyl Halides (Halo Alkanes) & Aryl Halides (Halo Arenes)
Given below are two statements :
Statement (I) : Alcohols are formed when alkyl chlorides are treated with aqueous potassium hydroxide by elimination reaction.
Statement (II) : In alcoholic potassium hydroxide, alkyl chlorides form alkenes by abstracting the hydrogen from the -carbon.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
- A
Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
- B
Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
- C
Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
- D
Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
Statement (I) misnames the mechanism. Aqueous KOH converts into by nucleophilic substitution (), not by elimination. The product (an alcohol) is correct, but the mechanism stated is wrong, so the statement as written is incorrect.

Statement (II) is correct: in alcoholic KOH the base abstracts a -hydrogen and chloride leaves, giving an alkene by E2 elimination.

Statement I incorrect, Statement II correct.
