JEE Main2025Jan 24, Shift 2Chemistry
Q.

The structure of the major product formed in the following reaction is :

  1. A

    1

  2. B

    2

  3. C

    3

  4. D

    4

Solution

Silver cyanide () is a classical reagent in which the silver-bound cyanide is largely covalent. As a result the more available, less hindered lone pair sits on nitrogen, so attacks alkyl halides through the nitrogen end (an -leaning, ion-pair pathway promoted by the formation of insoluble ).

The aryl halides (-I and -Br on the ring) are unreactive under these conditions because they cannot undergo nucleophilic substitution. Only the benzylic reacts.

Outcome: the benzylic chloride is converted to a benzylic isocyanide (), with -I and -Br untouched.

Correct option: (2)
