JEE Main 2025 Apr 7 Shift 1, Chemistry Q6: Properties of Ether
Given below are two statements :
Statement I : Dimethyl ether is completely soluble in water. However, diethyl ether is soluble in water to a very small extent.
Statement II : Sodium metal can be used to dry diethyl ether and not ethyl alcohol.
In the light of given statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
- A
Statement I is false but Statement II are true
- B
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- C
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
- D
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
Statement I: Dimethyl ether (CHOCH) is small and forms hydrogen bonds with water through its lone pairs on oxygen, giving it complete miscibility with water. Diethyl ether (CHOCH) has larger hydrophobic alkyl groups; H-bonding with water is still possible but the bulkier non-polar portion sharply limits aqueous solubility (only about 78 g per 100 mL). The contrast described is correct.
Statement II: Sodium metal reacts vigorously with the OH bond of ethanol to liberate H:
Diethyl ether has no acidic OH proton, so sodium is inert toward it. Sodium is therefore a suitable drying agent for diethyl ether but unsuitable for ethanol. Statement II is correct.
Both statements are true Option (4).
