JEE Main 2025 Apr 7 Shift 1, Chemistry Q12: Analysis of Amines
JEE Main2025Apr 7, Shift 1Chemistry
Q.
When a salt is treated with sodium hydroxide solution it gives gas X. On passing gas X through reagent Y a brown coloured precipitate is formed. X and Y respectively, are
- A
X = NH and Y = HgO
- B
X = NH and Y = KHgI + KOH
- C
X = NHCl and Y = KOH
- D
X = HCl and Y = NHCl
Solution
The classical confirmatory test for ammonium ion involves two steps:
Step 1 (liberation of gas X): An ammonium salt warmed with NaOH liberates ammonia gas.
Step 2 (confirmation with Nessler's reagent): Nessler's reagent is an alkaline solution of K[HgI]. It reacts with NH to give a brown (iodide of Millon's base) precipitate:
The brown precipitate is iodide of Millon's base.
X = NH, Y = KHgI + KOH Option (2).
