JEE Main 2025 Apr 7 Shift 1, Chemistry Q13: Group 14 Elements: The Carbon Family

JEE Main2025Apr 7, Shift 1Chemistry
Q.

The group 14 elements A and B have the first ionisation enthalpy values of 708 and 715 kJ mol respectively. The above values are lowest among their group members. The nature of their ions A B respectively is

  1. A

    both reducing

  2. B

    both oxidising

  3. C

    reducing and oxidising

  4. D

    oxidising and reducing

Solution

The two lowest first ionisation enthalpies in group 14 belong to the heaviest stable members, tin and lead. So A = Sn and B = Pb.

The inert pair effect makes the oxidation state increasingly stable down group 14 and the state increasingly unstable.

  • Sn: less stable than Sn Sn tends to lose two more electrons and gets oxidised, so it acts as a reducing agent.
  • Pb: less stable than Pb Pb tends to accept electrons and gets reduced, so it acts as an oxidising agent.

A is reducing and B is oxidising Option (3).
