JEE Main 2025 Apr 7 Shift 1, Chemistry Q14: d-Block Elements

JEE Main2025Apr 7, Shift 1Chemistry
Q.

The first transition series metal 'M' has the highest enthalpy of atomisation in its series. One of its aquated ion (M) exists in green colour. The nature of the oxide formed by the above M ion is :

  1. A

    neutral

  2. B

    acidic

  3. C

    basic

  4. D

    amphoteric

Solution

In the 3d series, vanadium has the highest enthalpy of atomisation, owing to the maximum number of unpaired d-electrons participating in metallic bonding.

Vanadium exhibits multiple aqueous oxidation states with characteristic colours: V (violet), V (green), VO (blue), VO (yellow). The green aquated ion is V.

The oxide formed by V is VO. In a transition-metal oxide, lower oxidation states give basic oxides while higher oxidation states give acidic oxides. VO, with vanadium in the state, is basic in character.
