JEE Main 2025 Apr 8 Shift 2, Physics Q1: Electric Potential
Given below are two statements: one is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R
Assertion A: Work done in moving a test charge between two points inside a uniformly charged spherical shell is zero, no matter which path is chosen.
Reason R: Electrostatic potential inside a uniformly charged spherical shell is constant and is same as that on the surface of the shell.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:
- A
A is true but R is false
- B
Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
- C
A is false but R is true
- D
Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A
Inside a uniformly charged spherical shell, the electric field is zero everywhere by Gauss's law, since a Gaussian surface drawn inside the shell encloses no charge.
With zero field, the electrostatic potential inside must be spatially constant, and continuity at the shell's surface forces this constant to equal the surface potential .
Work done in moving a test charge between any two points is ; when the two points share the same potential, this work vanishes and the path taken is irrelevant.
Assertion A follows directly from the potential being constant inside, so R is a valid statement and it is precisely the underlying reason for A being true.
Both A and R are true, and R correctly explains A, matching option (2).
