Q.

One mole of the octahedral complex compound Co(NH)Cl gives 3 moles of ions on dissolution in water. One mole of the same complex reacts with excess of AgNO solution to yield two moles of AgCl(s). The structure of the complex is :

  1. A

  2. B

  3. C

  4. D

Solution

Only ions in the outer sphere dissociate in water and are precipitated by Ag.

Two pieces of data must be satisfied simultaneously:

(i) 3 ions per formula unit on dissolution, and (ii) 2 mol AgCl per mol complex (so 2 Cl are ionisable, leaving 1 Cl inside the coordination sphere).

The formulation dissociates as one complex cation plus two Cl ions, giving 3 ions in solution, and the two free chlorides precipitate as 2 mol AgCl.

Option (1).
