JEE Main 2025 Jan 29 Shift 1, Chemistry Q3: Colligative Properties
The molar conductivity of a weak electrolyte when plotted against the square root of its concentration, which of the following is expected to be observed?
- A
A small decrease in molar conductivity is observed at infinite dilution.
- B
A small increase in molar conductivity is observed at infinite dilution.
- C
Molar conductivity increases sharply with increase in concentration.
- D
Molar conductivity decreases sharply with increase in concentration.
For a weak electrolyte, ionisation is governed by Ostwald's dilution law: the degree of dissociation rises steeply as concentration falls, and .
Consequently a plot of vs shows a sharp fall as concentration increases (i.e. as grows), and approaches only asymptotically at very high dilution. This is qualitatively different from a strong electrolyte's near-linear Debye-Huckel-Onsager behaviour.
