The equation of a plane progressive wave is given by $y = 5 cos π (200 t - \frac{x}{150})$ where $x$ and $y$ are in cm and $t$ is in second. The velocity of the wave is ______ m/s.

Solution

For a wave of the form $y = A cos (ω t - k x)$ , the speed is $v = \frac{ω}{k} = \frac{coefficient of t}{coefficient of x}$ .

Here, with $x$ in cm and $t$ in s:

$v = \frac{200 π}{π /150} = 200 \times 150 = 30000$ cm/s $= 300$ m/s
