Q.

Given below are two statements :

Statement I : Each electron in orbitals destabilizes the orbitals by and each electron in the orbitals stabilizes the orbitals by in an octahedral field on the basis of crystal field theory.

Statement II : All the -orbitals of the transition metals have the same energy in their free atomic state but when a complex is formed the ligands destroy the degeneracy of these orbitals on the basis of crystal field theory.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. A

Both Statement I and Statement II are correct

  2. B

Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect

  3. C

Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect

  4. D

Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct

Solution

Statement I is the standard CFSE accounting in an octahedral field: each electron sits above the barycentre and each electron below it. Correct.

Statement II: in a free atom the five orbitals are degenerate; ligand approach in a complex creates an electrostatic field that splits this degeneracy. This is exactly the premise of crystal field theory. Correct.
