JEE Main 2026 Apr 6 Shift 1, Chemistry Q18: Properties of Alcohol
Arrange the following compounds according to increasing order of boiling points.
(A), (B), (C) and (D).
- A
C B A D
- B
D C B A
- C
C D B A
- D
D B A C
Boiling points scale with intermolecular forces. All four compounds have similar molar mass, so the discriminator is the strength and extent of H-bonding.
-butane (C): only weak dispersion forces lowest bp.
Diethylamine (D): secondary amine, allows one H-bond per molecule, but only one H on N, so weak H-bonding network.
-butylamine (B): primary amine with two N-H bonds, more extensive H-bonding than secondary amine.
-butanol (A): O-H bond stronger and more electronegative than N-H, gives the most extensive and strongest H-bonding highest bp.
C D B A.
