Q.

Total number of alkali insoluble solid sulphonamides obtained by reaction of given amines with Hinsberg's reagent is ____ .

Aniline, N-Methylaniline, Methanamine, N, N-Dimethylmethanamine, N-Methyl methanamine, Phenylmethanamine, N-propylaniline, N-phenylaniline, N, N-Dimethylaniline, Allyl amine, Isopropyl amine

  1. A

    4

  2. B

    2

  3. C

    8

  4. D

    5

Solution

Hinsberg's reagent (PhSOCl) gives products that distinguish amine classes:

amines N-H-bearing sulphonamide, soluble in alkali.

amines disubstituted sulphonamide with no N-H, insoluble in alkali.

amines do not react to form an isolable solid sulphonamide.

So count only the secondary amines in the list:

1. N-Methylaniline (PhNHCH) — 2.

2. N-Methyl methanamine (CHNHCH) — 2.

3. N-propylaniline (PhNHCH) — 2.

4. N-phenylaniline (PhNH) — 2.

Count = 4.
