Solution

Place the 10 kg mass at the origin and the 20 kg mass at $x = 10$ m.

Distance of centre of mass from the 10 kg mass:

$X_{C M} = \frac{m _{1} \cdot 0 + m _{2} \cdot 10}{m _{1} + m _{2}} = \frac{20 \times 10}{10 + 20} = \frac{20}{3}$ m.
