NEET2022Chemistry
Q.

Given below are two statements:

Statement I :

In the coagulation of a negative sol, the flocculating power of the three given ions is in the order Al Ba Na

Statement II :

In the coagulation of a positive sol, the flocculating power of the three given salts is in the order NaCl NaSO NaPO

In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:

  1. A

Both statement I and statement II are incorrect.

  2. B

Statement I is correct but statement II is incorrect

  3. C

Statement I is incorrect but statement II is correct.

  4. D

Both statements I and statements II are correct.

Solution

According to the Hardy-Schulze rule, the flocculating power of an ion grows rapidly with the magnitude of its charge.

For a negative sol, positive ions cause coagulation. Charge magnitudes follow Al Ba Na, so Statement I is correct.

For a positive sol, negative ions cause coagulation. Charge magnitudes follow PO SO Cl, so the correct order is NaPO NaSO NaCl. Statement II reverses this and is therefore incorrect.
