Q.

Given below are two statements; one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason(R) .

Assertion (A) : ICl is more reactive than I.

Reason(R) : I-Cl bond is weaker than I-I bond.

In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

  1. A

Both (A) and (R) are correct but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A).

  2. B

    (A) is correct but (R) is not correct.

  3. C

    (A) is not correct but (R) is correct.

  4. D

Both (A) and (R) are correct and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).

Solution

Interhalogen compounds are generally more reactive than the parent halogens because the bond between two different halogens (X-X') is weaker than the bond in either X-X molecule (except F, which is anomalously weak).

For ICl, the polar I-Cl bond is weaker than the homonuclear I-I bond, so ICl dissociates more readily and reacts more vigorously than I. Hence Assertion (A) is correct.

Reason (R) accurately identifies the bond strength comparison, and it is the correct cause of the enhanced reactivity. So both statements are correct and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).
