NEET2022Chemistry
Q.
Which amongst following is incorrect statement ?
- A
C molecule has four electrons in its two degenerate molecular orbitals.
- B
H ion has one electron
- C
O ion has diamagnetic.
- D
The bond orders of O, O, O and O are 2.5, 2, 1.5 and 1, respectively.
Solution
O has 15 electrons. Filling the molecular orbital diagram leaves one unpaired electron in the antibonding orbital.
A species with one unpaired electron is paramagnetic, not diamagnetic. Hence statement (3) is incorrect.
The other statements are accurate: C indeed has four electrons in the degenerate bonding orbitals, H has just one electron, and the bond orders listed for the O family follow directly from MO theory.
