NEET2022Biology
Q.
"Girdling Experiment" was performed by Plant Physiologists to identify the plant tissue through which :
- A
water is transported
- B
food is transported
- C
for both water and food transportation
- D
osmosis is observed
Solution
In the girdling (or ringing) experiment, a ring of bark including phloem is removed from a tree trunk without damaging the xylem.
The portion above the ring continues to receive water (xylem is intact) but cannot send food downward. Accumulation of food above the ring and starvation of tissues below the ring demonstrate that food is transported through the phloem.
