Frankia is an actinomycete that forms symbiotic, nitrogen-fixing nodules on the roots of certain non-leguminous plants, including Alnus (alder), Casuarina, and others.

Rhizobium nodulates legumes, whereas Rhodospirillum and Beijerinckia are free-living nitrogen fixers.
