Q.

What is the role of large bundle sheath cells found around the vascular bundles in C plants ?

  1. A

To provide the site for photorespiratory pathway

  2. B

To increase the number of chloroplast for the operation of Calvin cycle

  3. C

To enable the plant to tolerate high temperature

  4. D

To protect the vascular tissue from high light intensity

Solution

In C plants, the large bundle sheath cells encircle the vascular bundles in a wreath-like arrangement (Kranz anatomy). They contain numerous chloroplasts where the Calvin cycle operates.

By concentrating CO around RuBisCO in these specialised cells, C plants minimise photorespiration and operate efficient photosynthesis even at high temperatures and low CO concentrations.
