Oogenesis begins very early in life. The oogonia (gamete mother cells) are formed in millions inside the fetal ovary during embryonic development.

These cells enter meiosis and become primary oocytes, which are arrested in prophase I until puberty, when meiosis resumes on a monthly basis under hormonal control.
