Solution

Null deflection in the galvanometer means no current flows through it, so the same current flows through the $400 Ω$ resistor and $R$ , and the potential across $R$ equals the $2$ V cell.

Current in the main loop: $i = \frac{10 - 2}{400} = \frac{8}{400} = 0.02$ A.

Then $R = \frac{V _{R}}{i} = \frac{2}{0.02} = 100 Ω$ .
