The resistance of platinum wire at $0^{\circ}$ C is $2 Ω$ and $6.8 Ω$ at $8 0^{\circ}$ C. The temperature coefficient of resistance of the wire is:

Solution

$R_{T} = R_{0} [1 + α (T - T_{0})]$ .

$6.8 = 2 [1 + α (80)] \Rightarrow 3.4 - 1 = 80 α \Rightarrow α = \frac{2.4}{80} = 0.03^{\circ}$ C $^{- 1}$ .

So $α = 3 \times 1 0^{- 2}^{\circ}$ C $^{- 1}$ .
