Solution

Reducing $Mn^{3 +}$ ( $d^{4}$ ) to $Mn^{2 +}$ ( $d^{5}$ ) gives a half-filled $d^{5}$ shell which is unusually stable. This drives the reduction strongly and makes $E^{\circ}$ for the couple strongly positive compared with neighbouring 3d couples.
