NEET2024Chemistry
Q.
The reagents with which glucose does not react to give the corresponding tests/products are
A. Tollen's reagent B. Schiff's reagent C. HCN D. NHOH E. NaHSO
Choose the correct options from the given below:
- A
B and E
- B
E and D
- C
B and C
- D
A and D
Solution
Glucose exists predominantly in the cyclic hemiacetal form with very little free -CHO present at any moment. Schiff's test and NaHSO addition need a free aldehyde and so are negative for glucose.
Glucose does respond to Tollens' (silver mirror), HCN (cyanohydrin), and NHOH (oxime), because these go through the small but reactive open-chain aldehyde.
