The kingdom Fungi is classified into Phycomycetes, Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes and Deuteromycetes on the basis of morphology of the mycelium, mode of spore formation and nature of the fruiting body. Mode of nutrition is not used as a classification criterion because almost all fungi are heterotrophs (saprophytic, parasitic or symbiotic).
