An unpolarized light beam travelling in air is incident on a medium of refractive index $1.73$ at Brewster's angle. Then:

Solution

At Brewster's angle, only the reflected light is completely polarised (perpendicular to the plane of incidence). The transmitted (refracted) light is only partially polarised.

By Brewster's law, $μ = tan (i_{p})$ . Given $μ = 1.73 \approx 3$ , so $tan (i_{p}) = 3 \Rightarrow i_{p} = 6 0^{\circ}$ .

By the law of reflection, the angle of reflection $= i_{p} = 6 0^{\circ}$ .
