Q.

Why can't insulin be given orally to diabetic patients?

  1. A

    Its bioavailability will be increased

  2. B

Human body will elicit strong immune response

  3. C

It will be digested in Gastro-Intestinal (GI) tract

  4. D

    Because of structural variation

Solution

Insulin is a polypeptide (protein) hormone. If taken orally, it would be broken down by proteases in the stomach and small intestine just like any dietary protein, losing all activity. That is why insulin has to be administered by injection.
