Given below are two statements : One is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R).
Assertion (A) : Both wind and water pollinated flowers are not very colourful and do not produce nectar.
Reason (R) : The flowers produce enormous amount of pollen grains in wind and water pollinated flowers.
In the light of the above statements, chocse the correct answer from the options given below:
- A
A is false but R is true
- B
Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
- C
Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A
- D
A is true but R is false
Wind- and water-pollinated flowers rely on abiotic agents to carry pollen, so there is no selective advantage in being colourful or producing nectar — Assertion A is true.
It is also true that such flowers produce huge amounts of pollen to compensate for the inefficiency of abiotic pollination — Reason R is true.
However, producing a lot of pollen is a separate adaptation, and not the reason for the lack of colour and nectar. Hence R does not explain A.
