Five capacitors of capacitances $C_{1} = C_{2} = C_{3} = C_{4} = 10 μ F$ and $C_{5} = 2.5 μ F$ are connected as shown, along with a battery of 50 V.

The equivalent capacitance and the charges on each capacitor respectively are :

Solution

$C_{1}$ to $C_{4}$ (each 10 $μ F$ ) are in series, giving

$C^{'} = \frac{10}{4} = 2.5 μ F$ .

This $C^{'}$ is in parallel with $C_{5} = 2.5 μ F$ , so

$C_{e q} = C^{'} + C_{5} = 5 μ F$ .

Charge on $C^{'}$ : $Q^{'} = C^{'} V = 2.5 \times 50 = 125 μ C$ . Since $C_{1}$ – $C_{4}$ are in series, each carries the same charge $125 μ C$ .

Charge on $C_{5}$ : $Q_{5} = C_{5} V = 2.5 \times 50 = 125 μ C$ .

So all five capacitors carry $125 μ C$ .
