Solution

Ethane reacts with Cl $_{2}$ under UV light to give ethyl chloride (X = C $_{2}$ H $_{5}$ Cl).

Ethyl chloride with NH $_{3}$ gives ethylamine (Y = C $_{2}$ H $_{5}$ NH $_{2}$ ).

Ethylamine, a primary aliphatic amine, when treated with NaNO $_{2}$ /HCl followed by H $_{2}$ O, gives the corresponding alcohol via an unstable diazonium intermediate that decomposes immediately to form ethanol (Z = C $_{2}$ H $_{5}$ OH).
